The Portevin-Le Chatelier effect in nickel-base superalloys: Origins, consequences and comparison to strain ageing in other alloy systems

Dynamic Strain Ageing (DSA) has reached widespread acceptance since its proposal in the 1940’s as mechanism behind Portevin-Le Chatelier effect ferritic steels. However, it remains an open question to whether classical can be extended Face-Centred Cubic (FCC) alloys, including nickel-based superalloys, often implicitly assumed. Given historical link between serrated flow and loss of ductility steels, understanding such consequences superalloys used key components a jet engine demands attention. This review compares plastic instabilities those effects temperature, strain rate, compositional, microstructural extrinsic testing parameters on extent mechanical properties.
